Mary Beth Pudup is a geographer teaching urban and regional political economy in the Community Studies department at UC Santa Cruz. She is currently working on a book about the spectacular rise and demise of the San Francisco League of Urban Gardeners (SLUG). During its heyday SLUG was the national non-profit exemplar in the field of community gardening and urban greening initiatives.
