Eric Porter is Professor of History and History of Consciousness at UC Santa Cruz. His research interests include black cultural and intellectual history, U.S. cultural history, critical race and ethnic studies, urban studies, and jazz studies. He is the author of What Is This Thing Called Jazz? African American Musicians as Artists, Critics, and Activists (2002); The Problem of the Future World: W.E.B. Du Bois and the Race Concept at Midcentury (2010); and New Orleans Suite: Music and Culture in Transition (2013), a collaboration with the photographer and fellow Critical Sustainabilities participant Lewis Watts.
